Aussie newcomer guides host to win

World Team Cup – Day 2
New Australian representative Aron Sherriff posted his maiden singles victory to give the home team a much-needed win over New Zealand at the World Team Cup at Tweed Heads today (18-5).

Sherriff’s strong straight sets result came on the back of a tense tie-break victory by team-mates Wayne Turley and Nathan Rice in the opening pairs rubber.

The Australian duo defeated New Zealand ’s Andrew Todd and Richard Girvan in a rollercoaster match.

The Kiwis scored a consolation win in the triples, but it was the 21-year-old Sherriff’s 10-1, 8-7 result over Ali Forsyth that secured the match.

“It’s a great feeling, I am just over the moon,” Sherriff said.

“To play for Australia is a dream come true, but to win a match against a great player like Ali makes it even sweeter.

“I’m thrilled to make a contribution after Nathan and Wayne got us started this morning.”

Turley and Rice obliterated the Kiwi team 23-0 in the first set before unbelievably conceding the second 5-7.

It took all the skill of the hosts to win the tie-breaker 4-3 at Tweed Heads Bowls Club.

In the triples, a dead rubber, New Zealand won 11-6, 8-7.
The win was an important one after Australia was downed by England on the opening day of the event.

The Australian women continued their solid form with a third straight win, this time toppling Scotland courtesy of wins in the pairs and triples.
Karen Murphy and Kelsey Cottrell, 16, teamed to defeat Scotland 7-10, 11-2, 3-2 in the pairs while Julie Keegan stepped up to join them in a triples win (7-8, 16-4, 7-0).
Keegan’s singles campaign stumbled against Kay Moran 10-6, 8-7.
Meanwhile, Ireland held off a plucky Canada 2-1 in their men’s match.
In the women’s event, New Zealand swept past Malaysia 3-0 and Ireland was too good for south-east Asia , completing a 3-0 triumph.
