Ireland will send arguably the strongest outfit of
all nations to the World Team Cup at Tweed Heads
Bowls Club with triple Commonwealth Games
medallist Jeremy Henry and three-time world
singles champion Margaret Johnston named.
Henry, currently in Australia playing New South
Wales premier league, will play alongside 1998
Commonwealth Games gold medal winners Martin
McHugh and Ian McClure.
McClure is presently teaming with Henry at New
South Wales’ powerhouse Taren Point Bowling Club
so the duo should combine well when action begins
at the World Team Cup on 17 May.
The burly Henry, 33, won the world indoor pairs
with McClure in 2004 and claimed World Bowls
Championship gold in 1996 in the pairs and singles
in 2000.
Thirty-three-year-old McClure began playing at
age 14 when his father encouraged him to take to
the green.
The decision proved to be a good one with gold
at Commonwealth Games level the highlight to date.
McHugh, the third 33-year-old in the outfit, is
renowned for his consistency and skill —
qualities that saw him secure the 2003, 2004, 2005
and 2006 Irish singles championship.
He will play singles at the World Team Cup
leaving Henry and McClure to team in the pairs.
Surprisingly, the impressive records of the
Irish men are slightly overshadowed by that of
Johnston.
The mother-of-three began playing bowls in 1964
“for a past-time”.
Here’s a quick brief on what’s been added
to her trophy cabinet since – 1986 Commonwealth
Games pairs champion, 1994 singles gold medal
winner at the Games, three-time world singles
champion and triple winner of the pairs at the
same event.
Add to that her 2004 World Champion of
Champions win, nine-time singles champion at
national indoor level and five wins at the same
level in the outdoor event.
Belfast-born Mandy Cunningham has been an Irish
international since 2004 and is impressing on the
world stage.
The 42-year-old will join Johnston and Donna
McNally at Tweed Heads Bowls Club.
McNally has appeared at three Commonwealth
Games (1998, 2002 and 2006) and claimed two Irish
titles; pairs in 2000 and triples three years
earlier.
