CANADIAN CHAMPS REUNITE FOR WORLD TEAM CUP

Twenty-two-year-old ace Ryan Bester and his 2004 World Bowls Championship pairs gold medal partner Keith Roney will come together once more when the invitational side from Canada tackles the world next week.

The three player Canadian team – completed by singles player Hreindra Bhartu – is one of eight selected to contest the inaugural World Team Cup at Tweed Heads Bowls Club from 17-25 May.

Bester, who also won a Commonwealth Games singles bronze medal in 2006, will be well-known to locals.

He plays his club bowls with Cabramatta in the New South Wales premier league.

The exciting youngster has a family connection to the sport – his grandfather, uncle and two brothers all played – and he is hoping to make his family and nation proud at the World Team Cup.

Roney’s achievements are headed by the World Bowls gold he scored with Bester in 2004. He aims to defend the title next year, but first hopes to add a World Team Cup trophy to his collection.

The 59-year-old was a semi-finalist in the pairs at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games last year and has been a member of the Canadian national team for more than 20 years.

With Bhartu, the three are expected to enjoy the indoor surface and could be the event’s surprise packet.

Meanwhile, the invitational team representing south-east Asia may be low on profile, but it’s big on talent.

Rita Shek, from Hong Kong, will join forces with Philippines ’ pair Mila Witheridge and Ronalyn Greenless for an assault on the World Team Cup.

While the skilled set of stars may take some time to come together, don’t be surprised if they claim a couple of big scalps throughout the round-robin competition.

Witheridge, a solid performer at the 2007 Asia Pacific Bowls Championship, will play singles at the event.

Greenless, who also played at this year’s Asia Pacific event, is set to partner Shek, 40, in the pairs.

Shek, who was first selected in the Hong Kong squad back in 2005, began playing bowls in 1993.

She lists her first major tournament win as the national singles crown she claimed in 2005.

Shek went on to represent Hong Kong at the 2006 Champion of Champions event in New Zealand .

There are a limited number of tickets available to the final days of the 2007 World Team Cup – book today at www.bowlsaustralia.com.au or by calling Bowls Australia on (03) 9819-2722.
