YOUNGSTER READY FOR THE WORLD

Australian youngster Aron Sherriff has vowed to take his attacking style to the world when he makes his international debut at the World Team Cup from 17-25 May.

Sherriff said there were few nerves just days out from the biggest event of his short career and he promised to hit the star-studded field with everything at Tweed Heads Bowls Club.

Australian selectors plucked the 21-year-old from relative bowls obscurity and handed him the task of carrying much of Australia ’s hopes at the inaugural World Team Cup.

However, the monumental task has done little to dull Sherriff’s keenness for the contest.

“I don’t know a lot about my opponents but they’re going to know even less about me,” Sherriff said, moments before boarding a plane today (14-5).

“I will just get out there and play my game. I am sure there’ll be a few nerves ahead of my first match, but that nervous energy is a good thing and I will use it to my advantage.”

Sherriff, who lost almost 15kg in his push for a place in the national squad, will join Commonwealth Games gold medallist Wayne Turley and Queensland ’s Nathan Rice in his first national team.

He is confident the trio can perform well on the indoor rink at Tweed Heads.

“I actually like playing indoors, it seems to suit my game pretty well and I enjoy attacking and trying to win, rather than waiting for my chances,” Sherriff explained.

“I might have to be patient this week, but when the chance to score comes along I will be out to make the most of it.”

Strong ticket sales point to packed stands across the finals at Tweed Heads Bowls Club and Sherriff is hoping the home-green advantage plays a part.

“It’s such an honour to play for Australia and to do it under the roof at Tweed Heads will be awesome, the atmosphere is going to be incredible,” he said.

“If we can do our bit and make it through to the semi-finals then the crowds will get right behind us and maybe cheer us to glory.”

National coach Cameron Curtis believes the Halekulani Bowling Club member will fit in at senior level.

“Aron’s been a teenage sensation on the bowls scene and this is his chance to transfer potential into performance for his country,” Curtis said.

“There was a time as a teenager that he was happy just playing tournaments and making good money on the circuit, but he really wanted to play for Australia and dedicated himself to losing weight and getting into shape.

“He’s ready to go and I can’t wait to see him out there.”

In the women’s draw another young Australian will be gunning for yet another trophy.

Sixteen-year-old Kelsey Cottrell will team with fellow Queenslander Julie Keegan and the reliable Karen Murphy to represent Australia in the women’s division.

Play begins at 8.00am on Thursday (17-5).
