SCOTLAND ’S GOLDEN GIRL TO PLUNDER DOWN UNDER

Scotland ’s Commonwealth Games and world championship gold medal winner Margaret Letham will spearhead her nation’s charge when the year’s biggest battle in international bowls begins at Tweed Heads Bowls Club on 17 May.

Letham, one of Scotland ’s finest bowlers, has a record to make even the most talented envious.

A pairs gold medallist at both Commonwealth Games and world championship level, Letham also won world indoor singles titles in 2005 and 2006.

Supporting Letham in the women’s team will be French-born Scot Karen Dawson, a 2004 World Champion of Champions finalist, and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Kay Moran.

While Letham and her team-mates will be eyeing the World Team Cup women’s trophy, the stars of Scotland ’s men’s team will be no pushover either.

Greame Archer, who won a World Indoor Bowls Council singles championship in 2000, has been selected for the inaugural World Team Cup in Australia .

The 40-year-old will be joined in the men’s side by Allan Hainey and Andrew Lauder.

Scotland ’s chances of securing the trophies on offer were boosted the moment it was announced the World Team Cup was to be contested on carpet.

The Scots have a long and distinguished history in both indoor and outdoor bowls, but their form under the roof of late has been something to behold.

Letham, 50, started playing bowls at age 16 as a result of her father’s passion for the game.

Across the past 35 years she has become a mainstay of Scottish sides but still has the passion and drive to achieve.

“I am aiming to play at World Bowls 2008 in New Zealand and also the Commonwealth Games in 2010,” Latham revealed recently.

Her professionalism and nous should hold the ladies of Scotland in good stead when play begins at Tweed .

Moran, 33, is at home on the big stage as well. She will be keen to go one better than the silver she scored during her last trip to Australia , the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

That day Australian heroes Murphy and Lynsey Armitage won a thrilling clash before a packed crowd at Darebin International Sports Centre.

When the rivalry is renewed between the Aussies and Scots another full house can be assured.
